A study in Business Succession

Mawson Group of Companies has been operating in both the hospitality and entertainment businesses in Saskatchewan and Alberta for the past 42 years. Twila and Trevor Mawson have been actively involved in these businesses for the last 20 years and have expanded into ownership and management of commercial properties. Trevor's experience and knowledge in the health and fitness industry has led him to recently open his 1st Mawson Health and Fitness Centre in Saskatoon, which is noted to be one of the finest in Canada.

Project Profile
After many successful years of buying and selling various properties and companies and successfully expanding the business, the Mawson group of companies was faced with involving the next generation of family members to carry on the family business. Eldon Mawson's main goal was to reduce the tax problems associated with his estate when transferring ownership to his children, Trevor and Twila.

Since 1981, our group has worked with Eldon in order to grow a healthy sustainable company and plan for his succession. We worked with Eldon's tax accountants and lawyers to assist him in sheltering the Mawson estate through a combination of risk management products, retirement savings, various trusts, corporate reorganization, and capital gains exemption initiatives. Eldon's children became actively involved in managing and expanding the business, and we have since worked closely with them as a component of the continuous business succession process.
